Have you or a family member been abused in prison?

Our nation is founded on the basic human rights afforded by the U.S. Constitution. A human right is something everybody has, regardless their ages, sexes, national origins, races, religious preferences and immigration status. Even those who are in prison are protected by the U.S. Constitution. However, not all organizations respect the human rights of others -- especially some of our nation's prisons. Prisoner abuse runs rampant in the United States, and it is largely ignored. Harmful acts of physical and sexual assault are committed against the incarcerated population nearly every day in...

Study indicates male racial profiling begins at an early age

The study was conducted by the Yale Child Study Center and involved preschool aged black children and white children as well as black and white educators. Its purpose was to identify which children received the most scrutiny or were singled out as displaying challenging behaviors. As an in-depth study, it also identified additional behaviors on the part of the educators that are too numerous to include in this post. One part of the study involved white and black educators watching video clips of young children: a black male, a white male, a black girl and a white girl. The teachers were told...

Dozens Of Inmates Injured Following Prison Guard Attack

On July 6, 2016, dozens of officers at the Mid-State Correctional Facility, outside Utica, conducted an unannounced -- and inexcusably violent -- raid on the prison's inmates. More than 30 prisoners suffered injuries, according to a report in the New York Times, including broken ribs, broken noses, contusions, and forced sodomy. The attack was an act of retaliation. Three days earlier, one of the prison's guards suffered an injury to his head. The causes of his injury are the subject of dispute. The guards' union claims that prisoners assaulted the officer while he was on duty. Inmates claim...

Personal injury can happen in a wide variety of circumstances

If you think about the term personal injury, what pops into your mind first? If you are like most New York residents, you probably thought of a motor vehicle accident. It is certainly true that many people suffer devastating personal injury in auto accidents caused by negligent parties, but this is just one way in which a person can be injured through negligence. Occupying or visiting unsafe premises can also lead to personal injury. For example, if you are at the mall and a faulty escalator causes you to be hurt, you have suffered a personal injury. In another example, suppose you are...

Report looks at prison guard abuse and brutality in New York

They are unpleasant topics that many New Yorkers prefer not to look at too closely: prison guard brutality and prisoner's rights. Most people would prefer to imagine a scenario in which a criminal is convicted for his or her crimes and sent away to pay the price. They don't want to imagine that a prisoner might be brutalized in a New York correctional facility. Instead they want to assume that the treatment of prisoners is fair and just. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. It is undeniable that the nation's prison system is less than ideal. On the corrections officers' side of the...

Are law enforcement agencies becoming too militarized?

If you ask most people what a policer officer's job is, they will reply that it is to protect the citizens of the United States. While this is true in many cases, growing changes in the tools and tactics of law enforcement agencies are causing more and more people to wonder how safe they really are. One example, as reported by ABC News, concerns the Phonesavanh family's experience with police brutality. In the early morning hours of May 28, the family from Janesville, Wisconsin awoke to loud bangs and blinding flashes in their temporary bedroom at a relative's home in Georgia. Their door...
